- Lot Description
.58 caliber, 40" barrel. Bright finish, iron furniture, brass nose cap, walnut stock. Standard Springfield lock markings, dated 1859, with matching barrel date. Original sling swivels, and swelled shank, tulip head ramrod. Original pattern 1858 rear sight base with 1861 pattern sight leaves. This is a transitional Type I-Type II rifle musket manufactured using the new 1858 pattern sight, but also using left over brass nosecaps from the earlier pattern. Produced prior to the introduction of the iron patchbox in July of 1859 that typifies the Type II 1855 rifle musket.
Very good. Metal lightly cleaned to bright with lightly scattered oxidation and scattered pinpricking. Fine bore, mechanically functional. Stock lightly sanded, cartouche weak and illegible.Condition
