- Lot Description
.54 caliber, 33" round barrel. Type III arsenal alteration of a Harpers Ferry "Mississippi" Rifle, with the addition of a long range sight and saber bayonet lug. Approximately 4,500 M-1841 rifles were altered to this configuration at Harpers Ferry circa 1856-1857, about half of which remained in the original .54 caliber, the rest being re-bored to .58 caliber. Lock and barrel with matching 1850 dates, correct Harpers Ferry marks on lock, correct HF AW/P inspection mark on barrel and correct JLR block letter inspection on stock flat and in patchbox. Correct M-1855 pattern rear sight and correctly modified brass tipped ramrod, modified for use with elongated ball ammunition. Original sling swivels in place. Patchbox contains original, period wiper, ball puller and cone wrench. With reproduction sling.
Very good overall, retaining no original finish and having a lightly cleaned pewter patina on the metal. Barrel with some lightly scattered oxidized discoloration and some pinpricking. Fine bore, mostly bright with crisp rifling. Mechanically functional. All markings clear and legible, brass with mellow butterscotch patina. Stock fairly crisp with scattered bumps, dings and handling marks.Condition
