.69 caliber, 42" barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Standard Remington marks on the Maynard lock, dated 1858 with the tang of the new breech dated 1857. Block NJ mark on left barrel flat and weak NJ ownership cartouche on stock. Rifled bore, 1855 pattern long range rear sight, correct alteration iron front sight blade, button head ramrod not cupped for elongated ball ammunition. Partial roll of Maynard primers in lock, original wooden tompion and correct pattern US M-1816 "Replacement Bayonet" are included.
One of approximately 2,000 US M-1816 muskets that were altered with chambered breeches for New Jersey. Remington manufactured the Maynard tape primer locks and Frankford Arsenal preformed the alterations, including the rifling of the bores. Most of these guns did not receive long range sights, with estimates that only about 200 did receive the 1855 pattern long range sight. This is one of those scarce New Jersey altered guns with the long range sight.
