Lot of 2. Society of California Pioneers ribbon, 3.75 x 11.25 in., heralding a "Complimentary Dinner to Gen. U.S. Grant" at the Lick House, Friday evening, October 24th, 1879. Satin ribbon includes a full menu for the evening. San Francisco: Crowe & Cooke. Accompanied by small booklet, 3.75 x 6 in., also produced for a dinner honoring Grant, held at the Golden Eagle Hotel. Sacramento, CA: Crocker's Print, October 22, 1879. The front of the booklet features a small photograph of Grant attributed to "Wolfe, Photographer," and interior includes a full menu printed on blue silk.
The Society of California Pioneers was founded in 1850, just as California was becoming a new state, by a group of six prominent San Francisco men and other early emigrants all of whom who had arrived in California before 1850. The original aims of the organization were to cultivate social bonds and to "collect and preserve information connected with the early settlement." Membership was restricted to those men who had arrived in the state prior to 1850 and their male descendants. It soon became a prominent organization with chapters emerging elsewhere in the state.
The October 24, 1879 issue of the Sacramento Daily Union announced that "General Grant and his wife had been invited by the city to spend a day or two here," and as part of the visit the Sacramento Society of the California Pioneers planned to issue General Grant a certificate of honorary membership. The small booklet and dinner menu were from a reception during Grant's visit to the city, a widely celebrated event as it was the first time a President had visited the city. On the afternoon of October 24th, Grant and his wife returned to San Francisco where they were in turn honored by the San Francisco Society of the California Pioneers. The couple enjoyed a banquet sponsored by the organization at the Lick House, for which this ribbon menu was created. The Lick House was a hotel constructed by the California entrepreneur James Lick, and was considered to be the finest hotel west of the Mississippi.
Ribbon menu is fraying slightly at the top and has a small, dark smudge on the upper right side not affecting text. Booklet cover has been taped along the seem but is in good overall condition. Pencilled notes on back of booklet.
