American, 19th century. A Union Village Shaker blanket chest in walnut of dovetailed construction, having a lift top surface with open interior; ht. 20.5, wd. 43.5, dp. 19.5 in.
This chest was made by Shakers at Union Village in Warren County, Ohio. It was given to Edward C. Pence (1861-1931), the last farm manager for the Union Village community. Pence and his wife, Lida (1869-1953), lived at the South Family with their daughter Leontine (1895-1971) until the community closed in 1910. These pieces, and others, descended in the family to the present day.
