- Lot Description
Grant, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). President of the United States (1869-1877). Partially printed DS, 1p, 22 x 17.75 in., with seal affixed lower left, Washington, DC. April 26, 1875. Signed by Grant as President and Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) as Secretary of State (1869-1877). Appointment of Edwards Pierrepont (1817-1892) as Attorney General of the United States.
Edwards Pierrepont of New York graduated from Yale and New Haven Law School. He practiced law in Columbus, OH from 1841 to 1845 and served as a judge of the Superior Court of New York City from 1857 to 1860. After serving as a member of a Military Commission, a member of the New York state constitutional convention in 1867, and attorney for the Southern District of New York, President Grant appointed him Attorney General in 1875, a position he held until 1876.
Some, if not all, folds appear to have fully separated but all have been reinforced or repaired with tape. Some tape residue/stain visible on the front near lower right. Seal is discolored on right side, and stain beneath seal on left side. Some ink transfer above top line.Condition
