.30-40 caliber, 30" barrel, S/N 8 0548. The receiver is marked U.S. / Model 1896 Springfield Armory. The stock is fitted with the Model 1896 rear sight, and features an 1895 inspector's cartouche at the wrist. The leather sling is marked N. Dimick CO A 16R P.V. (I). This rifle was sent to Company M of the 10th U.S. Volunteer Infantry on Nov. 11, 1898, per the book Springfield Research Service Serial Numbers of Martial Arms.
The cleaning rod slot has been filled in with wood, otherwise very good overall condition, with only minor fading on parts of the finish to the barrel and receiver.
