.44 CF, 8" octagonal barrel, S/N 113660. Blued finish, walnut grips. Sub-inspected throughout with clear inspection cartouche on left grip. A period gunsmith alteration of a US military Remington M1858 New Model Army to some form of .44 center fire cartridge, with a bored through cylinder, welded cylinder extension and removable back plate. Backstrap of revolver engraved George E Albee.
According to the consignor's research George E. Albee was born in Lisbon, NH in 1845, and eventually relocated to Madison, WI. During the Civil War, Albee served in Berdan's Sharpshooters (1st USSS, Co G), from which he was discharged after being wounded in the hip at 2nd Manassas. He then enlisted in the 3rd WI Light Artillery, being discharged for promotion in February 1864 to serve as the 2nd Lt. of Co. F, 36th Wisconsin Infantry. Albee was captured at Ream's Station in August of 1864 and was subsequently released. After the war, he served as a Lt. in the 36th USCT, then the 41st US Infantry and finally the 24th US Infantry, retiring in 1878. While serving as a 1st Lt. with the 41st. US Inf., Albee received the Congressional Medal of Honor, for an action on October 28, 1869. The citation notes that action tool place along the Brazos River in Texas, where he "attacked with 2 men a force of 11 Indians, drove them from the hills, and reconnoitered the country beyond."
