.64 caliber, 40" smooth barrel, no S/N. Bright finish with oval clamping barrel bands. Blade front sight with replacement rear leaf sights. Left side barrel near breech marked with VP and eagle proofs, lockplate marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" with 1863 date. Lock has some replacement parts, with plate and sear marked "P," with tumbler showing German proofs and "33" numerals. Hammer is marked "3" on reverse. Sideplate marked with weak cartouche. Stock also appears to have remnants of retaining springs for barrel bands. Likely a piece sold by Frank Bannerman, a popular military surplus dealer of the late 19th century.
