- Lot Description
U.S. Model 1859 Sharps Rifle
.52 caliber, 34.5" barrel with three barrel bands, S/N 36679 . Blued finish, iron furniture and patchbox smooth walnut stock and forend. Standard three-line Sharps address on barrel and NEW MODEL 1859 marks, standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings on lock and both sides of receiver. Illegible cartouche at wrist. Saber bayonet lug under barrel, long range leaf rear sight, stud and blade front sight, sling swivels with Civil War era M1857 musket sling. Includes an 1861 dated Ames brass handled saber bayonet that is not numbered, but does fit the lug. As the barrel is approximately 1.5" short of its full length, it is impossible to know if the muzzle ring would correctly fit the barrel, but the muzzle ring does measure .816" which is within the correct range. Bayonet is accompanied by a correct style brass mounted leather scabbard. Obverse of butt stamped in two lines and reads 8CV/G39 . The "8" may be a "3" as the stamp is not clear. At least some of the 600 36" Sharps Rifles were delivered to the state of Connecticut.
Good. Barrel shortened as noted. Metal with minute traces of blue and a smooth plum brown patina with some scattered surface oxidation. Markings remain mostly clear, cartouche weak. Mechanically functional, very good bore with lightly scattered pitting. Stock worn with numerous bumps, dings, mars and marks. Bayonet and scabbard very good, sling about good, worn and weak.Condition
