30.5" single-edged blade with 20.5" median fuller, 36.5" overall. Brass guard with wire-wrapped shagreen grip. Steel scabbard with brass furniture. Blade adorned with American Eagle, "US", and martial themes. Left ricasso marked "Ames Mfg Co, Chicopee, Mass" in three lines." Hilt adorned with floral engravings. Top band of scabbard marked "Lieut. I.P. Gragg, 61st Mass. Vols." in two lines.
18 -year-old clerk Isaac P. Gragg of Roxbury, Massachusetts, enlisted as a Private in Company "D" of the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in May of 1861. The regiment travelled to Washington, and fought at the Battle of Blackburn's Ford, three days before the First battle of Manassass. Latter attached to Hooker's Corps during the Penninsula Campaign, and suffered losses at Williamsburg and the Seven Days Battles, especially Glendale and Malvern Hill. Continuing to serve under Hooker, it also saw action at Second Manassas, where it took heavy losses. The Regiment also participated in the Battles of Fredericksburg, and as a part of General Sickle's III Corps, it fought at Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where it was part of Sickle's ill-fated action at the Peach Orchard. It was reassigned to Hancock's II Corps, and saw action at The Wilderness and Spotsylvania, where it was heavily engaged at the Bloody Angle. Regiment lost during service 8 officers and 134 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 officer and 78 enlisted men by disease.
At the end of his three-year term, Gragg mustered out as a Corporal and reenlisted as a Second Lieutenant in Company "C" of the 61st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in September 1864. The regiment was assigned to Benham's Engineer Brigade, Army of the Potomac, which whom it constructed fortifications in Federal-occupied territory. In March of 1865 it was assigned to the 9th Corps of the Army of the Potomac, and reassigned a month later to the 5th Corps. During its service, it participated in the Appomattox Campaign and assault of Petersburg, with the loss of one Officer and five Enlisted men killed and twenty Enlisted men by disease. Gragg mustered out as First Lieutenant of Company "G" with a brevet promotion to Captain of U.S. Volunteers in April of 1865.
