.69 caliber, 42" rifled round barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Lock with usual Pomeroy contract markings and dated 1840 at the tail. Standard contract inspection marksUS/JCB/P at breech with tang dated 1841. Stock has clear WAT final inspection cartouche on the flat and the shadow of the sub-inspector's cartouche. Complete with a correctly modified trumpet shaped ramrod with a recessed face for elongated ball ammunition. Retains the sling swivels and includes a correct pattern US M-1835 socket bayonet and a wooden tampion.
Pomeroy only produced 7,000 M-1835/40 flintlock muskets under their original contract. It appears that most of the few hundred that were subsequently altered to percussion, and further upgraded by being rifled and sighted were arms that had been originally issued to the state of Virginia under the Militia Act of 1808, and were forwarded to Frankford Arsenal in 1860 for this upgrade and were returned to the state before the outbreak of hostilities. Less than 500 US M-1840 muskets were so altered for Virginia. This is likely one of those and as such a scarce secondary Confederate musket.
