.57 caliber, 40" barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Lock with standard Springfield markings and dated 1851. No visible barrel date or cartouche. Barrel with standard V/P/Eagle Head proofs. Rear barrel band numbered 78, typical of cadet use. Buttplate additionally rack numbered B/35. Rifled bore, correct pattern long-range rear sight and iron front sight. Original ramrod, correctly cupped for elongated ball ammuition. Retains both sling swivels. Includes an original, correct pattern US M-1851 Cadet Socket Bayonet, marked US on the ricasso, 198 on the rear of the socket and also with the number 28 on the socket and locking ring. The bayonet is contained in an enameled leather scabbard with a sewn only frog of blackened buff leather with a brass finial. Includes a wooden tompion.
A scarce gun in its own right, only 4,000 M-1851 Cadet Muskets were produced at Springfield c1851-1853. Of these, slightly more than 300 were rifled and sighted with 300 subsequently issued to the West Point corps of cadets c1857. The bayonet is more scarce than the M-1851 musket, and rarely encountered for sale. A must have item for any collection of US military cadet rifles.
