Postcard 3.75 x 5 in., with "G.H.Q/-G.B. Xmas 1919." At bottom is inscribed: "Merry Xmas to you / Haig F.M." Field Marshal Douglas Haig (1861-1928) was commander of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) on the Western Front in WWI from 1915 until the end of the war, commanding many of the major offensives, such as the Battle of the Somme, the 3rd Battle of Ypres, and the German Spring and Hundred Days' Offensives. Haig's legacy is certainly mixed, with some blaming him for the enormous number of casualties during WWI, and others pointing out his adoption of new technologies (especially air power) and tactics that made the British Army stronger in the long run.
Also included is a prewar photo album, 10.75 x 12.75 in., green cloth with "Sunny Memories" in black on front, beveled boards. The pre-cut mats on each page are a variety of sizes and shapes, with ovals, larger and smaller rectangles. The last page has five cyanotypes, three with 1909 dates. The latest date we found was 1912. There are a number of photos of military units: Yorkshire Dragoons, several (each) are labeled Brecon, Caerwys, RHYL, Upton, and several have other abbreviations (D.II.J.V., V.II.S.).
A small album, 5.75 x 7 in., has 24 postcards and postcard-sized images, and 30 smaller images. Front pastedown with Gothic lettering "War Photos." One postcard shows a uniformed soldier with "Don't be Alarmed the 16th Middlesex are "On Guard" at Woldingham." A couple images are captioned in the negative "Recruiting Day Caterham, 14th April 1915." Many of the images have captions. One series is from the Aubrey House Hospital. A number of pictures are of the 6th Battalion, "The Buffs." There are a few newspaper clippings, including a list of wounded and prisoner, August 1916. The last images affixed to the rear pastedown is labeled "Return of Field Marshal, Sir Douglas Haig from France. Dover Dec. 1918."
