A mixed lot of 11 CDV’s with an early 20th century copy shot mounted on board. Nine of the soldiers are identified while seven are in uniform. First is a CDV of Col. Ansel D. Wass in civilian dress by “J.S. Mitchell, Cambridge, Mass.” Wass joined as 1st Lieut. 4/61 and ended the war as a Bvt. Brig. Gen. having been wounded four times (Yorktown, Glendale, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station). Wass served in no less than five different Massachusetts units during the war: 4th, 19th, 60th, and 62nd Infantry as well as the 3rd Cav. 1st Lieut. Freedom H. Lander is pencil identified by “C.B. Conant, Lewiston, Me.” He presents his chasseur kepi to the camera upon which is fastened a wonderful 5th Corps Maltese Cross. Lander was commissioned 1st Lieut., Co. E., 23rd ME. 9/62; m/o 7/63; re-enlisted 9/64 as 1st Lieut., Co. A, 29th ME.; m/o 6/5/65. Capt. Gilbert K. Perry is faintly signed in ink on verso over “E. Crockett, Rockland” imprint. Perry served for the duration in the western theater, 14th Corps, having enlisted as 1st Lieut., Co G, 38th Indiana 9/61; promoted Capt. 9/62; discharged 2/15/65. Artilleryman Nathan P. Tabor by “B.W. Hines, Vassalboro” is pencil identified. Tabor served in both the 3rd ME. and Battery E, 1st RILA during the war; m/o 6/14/65 as Cpl. Cpl. William Prescott is pencil identified by “B.J. Chute, Boston.” Entering service as Pvt., Co. I, 1st Mass. Inf, Cpl. Prescott was reported missing 5/3/63 at Chancellorsville, m/o 5/25/64. Pvt. & Sgt. Mariner S. Fickett with NYC imprint is shown wearing a military vest. Fickett served in Co. B, US Army Engineer Battalion from 12/61 until discharged on 5/7/67. “Charles Coffin” is pencil signed on verso, no back mark. Coffin is thought to have served in Co. G, 29th ME. as Cpl. & Sgt.; m/o 6/21/66. Ink signed in civilian dress is Sgt. Lewis E. Pearson who enlisted in Co. F, 29th ME. as Cpl. 1163; m/o 6/21/66. Also in civilian dress is Henry W. Pitts” who served in Co. A, 1st Mass. Heavy Artillery. A lengthy inscription on verso indicates that Pitts was “a prisoner at Libby” (POW 1027/64 Boydton Plank Rd.) and exchanged 2/65; died of disease 5/19/65. A tentatively identified soldier is civilian dress is Capt. Enoch Knight., Co. E, 12th ME.; resigned 8/25/63. The early 20th century copy shot on 5”x8” thick board is inked “Samuel P. Durrell” by a descendant. Durrell was Cpl. in Co. K, 14th ME.; m/o 8/28/65.
