- Lot Description
Pimentel, Manoel. THE BRAZIL PILOT; OR, A DESCRIPTION OF THE COAST OF BRAZIL. Translated from the Portuguese of Manoel Pimentel ... to which are added, Charts, of some of its most considerable ports. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, 1809. 78 pp. and 15 maps. 11 by 9 inch early full suede binding with the remains of a red leather label to the spine. A rare atlas which has apparently not come to auction since a Bonham's sale in 1998 when it brought $1400. Sabin, 62884. The maps and charts comprise, a large map of Brazil and Uruguay, plans of harbours, etc., of Bahia, Pernambuco, Fernando Noronha, Porto Seguro, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alerto, St. Sebastian, Santos, Porto S. Pedro, Paranagua, Cananea, Colonia Sacramento, etc. Bound in at the end of the text is a 5 page manuscript in a careful hand written in English titled, "Remarks on the North & South Bar of St. Catharine." These include very detailed navigational directions and comments regarding weather conditions and varying approaches to the "Rio Grande bar," etc. One page includes a vertical row of 9 "Flags to be Hoisted on the Foremast," which are carefully colored by hand. The final page of manuscript contains a 60 word description of the suggested approach to Havana Harbour "keeping close to the Morro Castle on the Starboard side." The manuscript is signed and dated (July 10, 1811) by one "J.J. Rambourges." ?
Largest folding map with an old, neat paper tape repair to verso and some slight separations (closed) at the fold lines. The 1/2 title page has separated and is laid in. Binding rubbed with chips and fraying at the head and tail of the spine, but generally sound and the contents are clean and complete.Condition
