Salt, Henry. A VOYAGE TO ABYSSINIA, AND TRAVELS INTO THE INTERIOR OF THAT COUNTRY, EXECUTED UNDER THE ORDERS OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT, IN THE YEARS 1809 AND 1810; IN WHICH ARE INCLUDED, AN ACCOUNT OF THE PORTUGUESE SETTLEMENTS ON THE EAST COAST OF AFRICA. Philadelphia : Published by M. Carey ; Boston : Wells and Lilly, 1816. Printed by Lydia R. Bailey. 9 1/8 by 5 3/4 inches in contemporary board covers with a modern cloth rebacking. The first American edition following the London first printing of 1814. Salt first visited Ethiopia in 1805 when under the employ of George Annesley, Viscount Valentia. He returned in 1809 on a diplomatic mission to pursue trade opportunities. He went on to great fame as an Egyptologist.
The original boards are stained; inner hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Moderate uniform toning to the pages which are otherwise clean and the binding is solid. The folding map is 16 by 11 1/4 inches and has a 2 inch closed tear at the lower margin and slight separation at one of the folds. It is quite clean, though, and the coloring in outline is strong and fresh.Condition
