- Lot Description
American, 1816. A plain compass with fleur-de-lis decoration to face, marked T. Whitney Maker / Philada. and struck No. 313; overall lg. 10.5 in., needle lg. 3.7 in.
Thomas Whitney (1761-1823) served his apprenticeship in England, moved to the United States and was naturalized in Philadelphia in 1798. In 1799 he appeared in the Philadelphia commercial directories as optician, mathematician and maker of instruments with a shop on South Front Street. His shop closed in 1824 the year after his death.
