Jefferson, Thomas (1743-1826) and James Madison (1751-1836). Third and fourth Presidents of the United States. Partially printed DS as President and Secretary of State, 1p, 15.75 x 8.75 in., Washington, DC. November 1, 1806. Document grants Jacob Coy of Hamilton County, Ohio "the South East quarter of Lot or Section number Nine of Township number Two in the Seventh Range of the Land lying between the Great Miami river and the Virginia reservation," for which he "made full payment" and "deposited in the Treasury a certificate of th Register of the Land-office at Cincinnati." Seal of the United States affixed to document.
The document states that the land was sold "by virtue of the right of pre-emption granted by law to certain persons who have contracted with John Cleves Symmes or his associates." John Cleves Symmes (1742-1814) grew interested in western expansion, especially into the Ohio Country, during his time serving as a Congressman for the state of New Jersey. He and his friends started a land purchasing company to buy up acreage between the Great Miami and Little Miami Rivers. They ended up being approved to purchase nearly 330,000 acres (paying about 67 cents per acre) with the requirement that they set land aside for school, religious purposes, and government use. The area became known as the Symmes Purchase, or Miami Purchase, and many settlers bought grants for parcels of the land from Symmes and his company. Because Symmes and his associates did not follow the government survey system, there was some confusion over boundaries and ownership, forcing many settlers to pay twice for their land, once to Symmes and then again to the actual owner of the property. Symmes became a judge in the Northwest Territory in 1788 until Ohio gained statehood in 1803, and actually moved himself to the Ohio Country, settling just south of Cincinnati in North Bend. The current village of Cleves, OH is named after Symmes.
