Lot Description

Shepard, Thomas. THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS OPEN AND APPLIED: being the substance of divers sermons on Matth. 25. 1, --- 13. Wherein the difference between the sincere Christian and the most refined hypocrite, the nature & characters of saving and of common grace, the dangers and diseases incident to most flourishing churches or Christians, and other spiritual truths of greatest importance, are clearly discovered, and practically improved. (London: s.n.), 1695. 10 3/4 by 7 inches in a contemporary full leather binding; [8], 198, 197-232, 190, [6] p. complete. Shepard emigrated from England in 1635 and served at First Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts and also at Harvard. ESTC R3266;1 Sabin 80213; Wing S3115. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box with a printed paper label to the spine.

Condition

Binding battered and heavily worn with loss to head and tail of spine; professional paper restoration to title page; closed tear to 40/41; tear at 63/64 with loss of a few letters. In spite of erratic pagination, the text is continuous. Extensive notes in manuscript on final leaf.
