The World. New York, January 2, 1865 - May 15, 1865. Vol. V, Nos. 1413, 1415, 1416, 1418, 1423, 1424, 1425, 1427 - 1431, 1433, 1434, 1440 - 1444, 1446 - 1464, 1466 - 1473, 1475, 1477 - 1481, 1484, 1491, 1494 - 1527. (68 issues) Bound.
By April 7, the newspaper reports on the end of the Confederacy.
April 10, with large headlines "Finis! Laus Deo!" (the End, praise God), detailing Lee's surrender the day before. Over the next few days, there are reports of the Union Generals after Johnston (who was still commanding the largest Confederate force).
April 15 brought the news of Lincoln's Assassination, although it appears that when The World went to press, it was thought that Seward was also dead. By Tuesday, The World had gotten a hold of maps of the location of the theater, the stage and Booth's journey across it, and the names of the assassins were known; Wednesday brought the paper with mourning borders around the page, which continued through Wednesday, April 26; April 28 brought the "Tragic End of President Lincoln's Assassin;" May 4, implicating Jeff Davis in the assassination of Lincoln.
These were the final months of the war. Every day brought reports of battles: Sherman's progress through the Carolinas after his rest in Savannah; reports on the draft; capture of Ft. Fisher; map of Battle of Hatcher's Run; prison life in the South (Castle Thunder and Salisbury, NC); rumors that Lee wanted to "arm the slaves;" Confederate troops in the west recalled to the east because of shortage of manpower; "Capture of Charleston...Two Miles of Buildings Reduced to Ashes;" petroleum - how it is bored and fortunes made; reports on Phil Sheridan's progress; and more.
Front board detached, one issue disbound near center. Most papers have at least a small misprinted area where the paper did not go through the printing machine quite straight. Overall paper in good shape. A few tears (where people turned a page, mostly).
