- Lot Description
Hand-colored lithograph, 24 x 30 in., titled in the margin The Soldier's Dream of Home. Philadelphia, PA: William Smith, 1864. Artistic credit to L.N. Rosenthal.
An unusually large and vibrant Civil War print.
While his comrades converse around the campfire, the sleeping soldier in the foreground dreams of being welcomed home by his wife, child, and parents. A similar print was sold by Currier & Ives, but set on a Southern beach and with differing scenes in the dream cloud, and usually much smaller. This example is expertly tinted with 10 different watercolors.
Condition
Very slight browning toward the top edge, else excellent.
Break to ivory circle on which the inkwell is mounted, some wear and a few losses to the paint on the lid of the inkwell.
