The Present State of Europe: or, the Historical and Political Monthly Mercury. London: Randal Taylor, February, 1703. Vol. XIV. 41 pp. (pp. 43-84). 6.25 x 8 in.
This is a newsbook (essentially, a very early monthly newspaper) containing an inside, 2pp detailed report of the Siege of St. Augustine, Florida by Americans during Queen Anne's war in North America. Queen Anne's War, which lasted from 1702 until 1713, was the North American stage of the War of the Spanish Succession. This was the second war in a series fought by the French and Indians against England for control of the North American continent.
The Siege of St. Augustine was an action in Queen Anne's War that took place during November and December of 1702. The English provincial forces gathered from Carolina and its native allies fought against the Spanish colonial fortress of Castillo de San Marcos at St. Augustine, in Spanish Florida. The provincial forces, led by Carolina governor James Moore, destroyed communities leading up to this major effort. Unfortunately for the English, the Spanish governor, José de Zúñiga y la Cerda, was given warning of the impending siege. Sending calls for relief to neighboring communities and withdrawing civilians and foodstuffs into the protective fortress, Governor Zúñiga y la Cerda more or less saved his community. English guns could not destroy the fortress walls, and Cuban troops came to the defend the Spanish. Moore was forced to lift the siege on December 30, 1702, and burned many of his boats before returning to Charles Town in defeat.
It is quite difficult to locate a newspaper with detailed coverage of hostilities in Florida during Queen Anne's War, making this piece a rather rare find.
