Lot of 3 documents (12pp) regarding the formation of the Oxford Turnpike Company, which developed one of the earliest private toll roads in Connecticut. They were chartered by the General Assembly of the State in May 1795.
The first document is incomplete, 2pp, and entails a detailed description of the route proposed for the road from Southbury to Derby by way of Oxford. This is a surveyed route: "We began a little north of Esqr. Woosters Dwelling House in Derby nearly opposite his new sawmill dam on the West side of the Country road at a Rock & Stones a Bounds of said Woosters Land and run Northerly forty one rods....etc."
The second document, 4pp, is a copy of the resolution to incorporate the Oxford Turnpike Company "by which name to sue & be sued in all Courts of Record. So ordain and establish such Bye Laws Ordinances and regulations as shall appear necessary for the Government of Said Society..." This document establishes tolls (coach and four - 25 cents; loaded cart - 12 1/2 cents; etc.). It was decided to raise 700 pounds for the repair of of the road.
The third document, 6pp hand-stitched together, builds on the second. "Whereas the honorable General Assembly at their session in May last did grant a Charter of Incorporation to such persons as should also vote under the name of the Oxford Turnpike company and shall put in good repair the road leading from Southbury to Derby through the parish of Oxford..." They would issue 100 shares of stock, and any profits would be divided by shares held, as with voting rights. No person would be permitted to own more than ten shares of stock. Page 5 is signed by 17 people followed by the number of shares they committed to purchase. Six of these commit to ten shares and another to eight. Six more only purchased two or three shares.
Most with separations starting along folds. Generally readable. The first seems to be missing a page.
