- Lot Description
American. A chromolithograph by Donaldson & Co., a Cincinnati publisher; 36 x 26 in. (sheet size).
William Michael Harnett's trompe l'oeil masterpiece was exhibited at the 1887 Cincinnati Industrial Exhibition and was supposedly the inspiration for Cincinnati artist Charles Meurer who began his own career focusing on this technique after seeing the painting. The Old Violin became Harnett's most famous work, and its popularity probably inspired Donaldson to make the lithograph.
Condition
Tear to upper and lower center extending 2 in. down from perimeter. Minor tears to edges. Creases.
