Hand-colored etching, 29.5 x 19.75 in. T. Goode. The "Leviathan" or Great Eastern Steam Ship. Designed by I.K. Brunel, Esq., F.R.S. Built by Messrs. Scott Russell & Co. Millwall. N.d., ca 1860. Features large, 26 x 9.5 in. illustration of the starboard side view and a diagram of the longitudinal section of ship. With a physical description of the Leviathan printed at bottom, as well as details about the ship's first voyage in September 1859, which was was cut short by a boiler explosion, and her eventual arrival in New York in June 1860.
One of the most iconic English steam ships of the 1850s and the first to cross the Atlantic, the Leviathan, AKA the Great Eastern, was first launched in 1858. She was 695 feet in length with a beam of 120 feet, allegedly making her the largest ship built until 1890. She was also the first to lay down the Trans-Atlantic cable.
Thin paper. Horizontal and vertical folds, with some areas of separation at folds, few that have been reinforced on reverse with tape. Some light chipping, short tears along edges. Inventory number inked in lower right corner.
SHIPPING. At the request of the buyer, Cowan's will authorize the shipment of purchased items. Shipments usually occur within two weeks after payment has been received.
