Bozeman Avant Courier. Bozeman, Montana Territory: July 21, 1876. Vol. 5, Number 32. 4pp, 18.25 x 24.25. Featuring multiple stories related to the ongoing Indian Wars, and specifically the aftermath of the Battle of Little Big Horn, which had occurred less than a month earlier on June 25-26, 1876.
The Great Sioux War of 1876, best known for the Battle of the Little Big Horn and Custer's Last Stand, was the continuance of a decades long conflict between the government of the United States and the Plains Indians. At the time of this historic newspaper, settlers in Montana Territory were still reeling from news of Custer's defeat while remaining fearful of the potential for new conflict. In a section titled "Indian Excitements," the paper describes fear in Helena over a supposedly imminent Indian raid. While suggesting the reports of a raid are false, the paper also suggests that "we think it the duty of our people to prepare, and at once, to repel an invasion. The whole border is now peculiarly situated. 'Eternal vigilance' should govern the frontier settlements."
Several other sections of the paper pertain directly to the aftermath of the Battle of Little Big Horn during which a fierce debate erupted over possible misconduct by officer's in Custer's command. This paper declares under the heading "Reno and Custer" that "The newspaper charge against Major Reno of disobedience of orders in Custer's fatal campaign, are received with great disgust. His friends claim that an investigation will relieve him completely." Other reports on ongoing military affairs reference Generals Crook and Terry, Secretary of War Alphonso Taft, and discussions on the number of hostile Sioux in the territory which was believed to have been underestimated prior to Custer's defeat. Gory details of battle permeated the press such as in this paper which declares "The Heart of Custer Cut out by the Indians."
A wonderful glimpse into the concerns and issues affecting settlers in the Montana Territory during the waning years of the Indian Wars.
