- Lot Description
Lithograph, 12 x 16 in., published by Currier & Ives, although lacking an imprint, 1861. Housed in carved wood frame, 17 x 21 in. overall.
Early in 1861, South Carolina Governor Francis Pickens attempted to attract other Southern states to the secessionist cause. President James Buchanan tried to preserve the Union, which created a struggle for control of the Union, depicted as the cow in the political cartoon offered here. With Buchanan and the Union distracted, Georgia “collected the cream” and seized the recently improved Fort Pulaski, before officially seceding.
Fold lines, with very small holes at a few intersections. Light soiling. Brown stain in front of Buchanan's face.Condition
