Republican Monitor. Cazenovia, NY: J.F. Fairchild & Son, May 3, 1836. 4pp, 15 x 20.25 in.
Featuring news of the fall of the Alamo, details on subsequent battles in the Texas Revolution, and a proclamation to citizens of Texas from David G. Burnet, the newly appointed President of the Republic of Texas.
In 1835, growing hostility erupted into armed conflict as the Mexican province of Texas rebelled against the Mexican government. Approximately two months before this newspaper was published, Texas officially declared its independence from Mexico, and established the new Republic of Texas. Following a 13-day siege, on March 6, 1836, the famed defenders of the Alamo Mission in San Antonio were defeated by President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Within weeks, however, the Texan forces had regrouped and on April 21st soundly defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto to secure the sovereignty of the Republic of Texas. This issue of the Republican Monitor includes reprinted articles from a variety of newspapers, and a searing repudiation of the perceived US bias towards the Texans and their claims regarding the conflict. "The Americans might be content with the aid and open assistance which they have furnished the Texians, in direct violation of their neutrality, and contrary to the treaty with Mexico. Instead of that they seem bent on adding insult to injury; and they repeat with emphasis, all the infamous slanders and ridiculous braggadocios of the Texians. Well, we shall see. It seems pretty well proved that one Seminole Indian is a match for a dozen North Americans; Santa Anna is now in Texas, and the Texian heroes will probably have an opportunity of making good their boast, that one North American is a match for a dozen Mexicans."
Separated in places along the vertical seam, however, not fully detached. Slight toning especially along edges, but overall in good condition.
