The Deseret News. Fillmore City [Utah Territory]: June 16, 1858. No. 15, Vol. VIII. 4pp, 11.25 x 16 in. Rare issue featuring Fillmore City on the masthead as the place of publication.
The first newspaper published in the Utah Territory, The Deseret News was founded in (Great) Salt Lake City in 1850 by members of the Mormon Church and remains today as one of Utah's prominent papers. It has been continually printed in Salt Lake City except for a five-month period during the Utah War, May to September 1858, when the presses were moved to Fillmore City (the original capital of the Utah Territory) and Parowan. The presses were ordered to be moved when US armed forces approached Mormon-held territory. Issues dated at Fillmore City were printed in the basement of the original Utah Territorial Statehouse, with the first Fillmore City issue printed on May 5, 1858.
This issue presents an interesting snapshot of the time period and of the ongoing struggles Mormons experienced as a religious minority. In a section titled "Another Massacre By Indians," the author relates that a group of Mormons were murdered while travelling peacefully and unarmed. He then asks, "Are the Indians who perpetrated this wanton butchery, some of the Administration's boasted allies for carrying on a crusade expressly to plunder and exterminate American citizens solely for their religious beliefs?"
Slight creasing on right side. Dampstain on upper edge line and running through all four pages not affecting text. A handwritten signature, C. Markley, appears on the left front side of the newspaper, however, no concrete identification can be made for this individual.
