- Lot Description
Hand-colored lithograph, 10.375 x 9 in., including margins. The First of May 1865 or General Moving Day in Richmond, Va. New York: published by H.&W. Voight, lithographed by Kimmel & Forster, 1865.
Rare lithograph featuring caricatures of Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson vacating the premises in Richmond, VA, with a number of onlookers, both African American and white, watching them as they leave. General Lee is shown clutching what looks to be a sword, rifle and bayonet, while Jefferson Davis struggles to carry a number of boxes on his back, each bearing the name of a Confederate State. A box labeled "CSA Treasury / Waste Paper" rests on the sidewalk in front of the ex-President of the Confederacy.
Condition
Toning to print. Colors remain vibrant. Small water stain along top margin. Previously taped along top edge. Loss to lower right corner.
