The Ball Player's Chronicle. New York: Thompson and Pearson, Editor: Henry Chadwick, July 25, 1867. Vol. 1, No. 8. 8pp, 11.5 x 15.5 in. Featuring articles and statistics on America's earliest baseball teams. Including full articles on the National vs. Cincinnati and the National vs. Buckeye written by Chadwick when he accompanied them as their official scorer on their inaugural national tour.
Henry Chadwick was English born, but an American man who did much to contribute to the game of baseball. An avid cricket and rounders player, he saw his first organized baseball game in 1856. The next year he began writing regular columns about the sport. Baseball historians credit him with creating box scores as well as using the abbreviation "K" as a strike out. He also created the modern score card and the statistics of batting average and earned run average. He edited for various publications including The Ball Player's Chronicle, one of the first publications solely devoted to baseball. His published statistics and articles allowed Americans to follow the games at home and brought out a wider public audience. The National Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him posthumously in 1938.
