Tennessee Sampler, Isabella Duncan
American (or possibly Scottish), ca 1846 or 1848. A pictorial sampler with a flowering vine border on three sides, the interior having several uppercase alphabet lines in varying stitches above the maker's name Isabella Duncan, the year 1846 or 1848, and pictorial elements such as flowers, a butterfly, birds, a deer, a basket, and an urn; 15.25 x 12.5 in. (sight).
The lot includes a detailed ancestral history of the sampler's maker. She was born in Tennessee on September 18, 1838, making her around age 8 or 10 when she made the sampler. Both of her parents were born in Tennessee in the late 18th century, making them some of the state's earliest settlers. Isabella married David King on June 19, 1856 in Knox County. In an 1880 census, the couple had four children in their household. Isabella died February 13, 1922 and is buried in Knox County at Old Gray Cemetery.
There are also ancestral records during this time period for an Isabella Duncan in Scotland. The fibers in the sampler are both silk and wool.
Some thread colors are severely faded, some stitches are missing, cloth is discolored. Not examined outside of frame.
