Printed broadside, 9.5 x 11.5 in., matted and framed, 13.75 x 15.75 in., promoting the "Splendid low pressure Steam Boat DeWitt Clinton / Capt. S.R. Roe" of the Albany, New York, and Troy Steam Boat Line. A large 9 x 3.25 in. illustration of the Hudson River side-wheel steamboat with American flags flying at each end is featured at center. The broadside advertises a direct trip from New York to Albany, promising that passengers will arrive in time "to take the Rail Road Cars for the West or Stages and Packets for the North, and Rail Road Cars for the East." With 1840-1841 New York newspaper clippings pasted on reverse. Ca early 1840s.
New York native Stephen R. Roe (1808-1885) was one of the most experienced steam navigators working on the Hudson River during the second and third quarters of the 19th century. In the mid 1830s, he was selected to serve as captain of the DeWitt Clinton, one of the leading steamboats engaged in the trade between New York and Albany at the time. Built in Huron, OH, and launched in 1836, the DeWitt Clinton weighed approx. 415 tons and measured 147 feet long. Although built to be a freight boat, she was also able to accommodate a large number of passengers.
Light central horizontal fold. Few areas with light imperfections to surface/slight abrasions. Overall attractive appearance. Two pieces of archival tape used to affix top edge of broadside to mat. Slight separation along central fold, near each edge. Some light wear along edges.
