.58 RF caliber, 37.75" barrel retained by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, case hardened breech block, smooth walnut stock. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD and with eagle, dated 1865 at tail. No barrel proofs, script ESA in an oval cartouche on counterpane Model 1864 pattern rear sight, M1861 pattern ramrod/cleaning rod, sling swivels. Only 5,000 M1865 "1st Allin" Conversion rifles were produced circa 1865, using most of the components from surplus US .58 caliber Rifle Muskets. A scarce gun in any collection of breechloading US martial arms.
