- Lot Description
.30-03, 24.2" barrel, S/N 29823. Serial number indicates 1904 production. Blued finish, finger groove walnut stock with two stock bolts. Stock cartouched C-SAA in a box, indicating being re-built at the San Antonio Arsenal. No barrel date or marks, as is correct for very early production 03s. Rear sight graduated to 2,400 yards, without the 2,700 yard upgrade for most 1905 rifles. Action is still chambered for .30-03 (a .30-06 dummy will not chamber) and somehow managed to escape the 1906 upgrades of 1903-1905 rifles. With the addition of an original 1904 stock, a very rare gun could be restored. Includes 1909 dated Springfield Arsenal M-1905 bayonet with a blued blade and wood grips in a 1910 pattern canvas covered rawhide scabbard. Metal oiler/cleaning kit case in butt trap, but cleaning accessories are missing. Also includes an unmarked 1907 pattern leather sling.
Good to Very Good. Retains some traces of finish, the balance a murky blue-gray-green patina. Some pinpricking. Mechanically functional, good bore. Stock with bumps and dings. Bayonet very good, sling good. Original, unaltered 1904-05 barreled actions with the correct, original .30-03 chambering, unmarked barrel and correct rear sight are very scarce. With the addition of the correct stock an extremely rare rifle would be correctly restored.Condition
