.58 caliber 12" barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Accompanying brass mounted walnut buttock. Maynard patent tape priming lock with standard Springfield markings and dated 1856 to rear of lock. Breech dated 1855. Barrel with standard V / P / Eagle Head inspection marks. No cartouche on counterpane. Multi-leaf fire blued rear sight, fixed front sight, swivel ramrod. Sling swivels on single brass barrel band and in toe of detachable stock. Stock buttplate marked US on tang. Pistol carbine is contained in a period commercial casing with dovetailed corners, walnut veneer and black velvet interior. The compartmentalized case contains what is labeled as an original M1855 Pistol-Carbine leather sling (broken), a copper shell motif powder flask, and a blued japanned tin full of original Maynard patent primer rolls, with brass embossed Massachusetts Arms lid. Some old musket sized percussion caps and a couple of .58 lead two-groove bullets are also included in the case. The lack of an inspection cartouche on a gun in such fine condition suggests that it might have been given from Springfield to someone as a gift or sample, as there is no chance the cartouche was removed. This may well be the only period cased example of a US M1855 Pistol Carbine extant.
Very fine to excellent. Bright metal with crisp clear markings. Maynard lock is fully functional, with a fine bright bore with traces of old grease. Sight, trigger and some of the small Maynard lock parts retain nice fire blue. Brass with a lovely, dull mustard patina. Stock very fine and crisp with light handling marks and some minor indentations where the butt was attached to the pistol grip. Wood with varnish that may be period. Accessories good to very good.
