Springfield Model 1886 XC Carbine
.45-70 caliber, 24" round barrel, S/N 334111 . Blued and color case hardened finish, walnut stock. Early trapdoor lock markings with 1873 date, 1873 marked low arch breech block. V/P/[eagle head] inspections and P proof at breech. Very weak script SWP / 1888 cartouche opposite lock and weak [circle]-P proof behind triggerguard. Correct " XC " marked Buffington rear sight, pinned front sight without hood, correct wrap-around sling swivel on upper band with sling swivel in toe. Sling bar and ring. 3-click tumbler, grooved trigger. No cleaning rods in butt trap. Comb rack numbered 52 / T . An interesting composite example of a scarce "Experimental Carbine" of which only 1,000 were produced.
Good. Retains some traces of finish mixed with a smooth plum patina with some flecks of surface oxidation. Clear marks in metal, wood marks worn. Mechanically functional, good bore with moderate frosting that needs to be cleaned. Wood worn with numerous bumps, dings, mars and handling marks.Condition
