- Lot Description
.45-70, 24" barrel, S/N 334358. Blued and case hardened finish, walnut stock. Breech block marked US / MODEL / 1873 lock with American eagle and standard two line US / SPRINGFIELD mark. 3-click tumbler, grooved trigger. Buffington rear sight is correctly marked XC on the ladder, front sight blade pinned to base. Long forend without cap, single barrel band with wrap around upper sling swivel, sling bar and ring. Buttplate with trapdoor for cleaning rod storage (rods not present).
A very scarce experimental Trapdoor "24" Barrel Carbine" produced c1886, with only about 1,000 produced, most of which saw service with cavalry regiments serving on the western frontier.
Very good. Retains some blue, mixed with a bluish-gray patina. Some case color remains on breech block. Mechanically functional, bore good, dirty and lightly pitted. Stock good with numerous bumps, dings, mars and scrapes and a sliver missing on the obverse forend, forward of the barrel band.Condition
