- Lot Description
Springfield Model 1875 Officer Rifle
.45-70 caliber, 26" barrel with single barrel band, S/N 91 , stamped in wrist. Blued and color case hardened finish, checkered walnut stock with nickel plated forend cap, not fitted for pistol grip. Lock marked in two lines: U.S./SPRINGFIELD with spread-winged eagle motif and decorated with high quality foliate scroll engraving. Receiver, barrel tang, hammer, buttplate tang, triggerguard, barrel band and forend cap all engraved en-suite. Breech block with standard M1873 markings, no cartouche present but fine [circle]-P proof is present in toe line of stock behind the termination of the wrist checkering. M1879 rear sight, dovetailed blade front sight with folding globe, adjustable vernier tang rear sight with incorrect ladder and eye piece. Small German silver escutcheon at wrist engraved with the script initials MHA . Low arch breech, 2-click tumbler, solid buttplate. Slotted wooden cleaning rod with nickel plated tip. Only 477 M1875 Trapdoor "Officers" rifles were assembled ca 1875-1885, and they are very scarce and desirable Trapdoor rifle variants.
Very good. Retains streaky traces of blued finish on the barrel mixed with a smooth plum patina. Lock and receiver with muted case colors with nice mottling that retain some areas of vivid color. All markings clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, fine bore with some light frosting. Stock retains crisp checkering with scattered bumps, dings and mars, showing handling and use. A solid example of a M1875 Trapdoor officer's rifle.Condition
