.50-52, 20" barrel, S/N 101899. Blued and case hardened finish, walnut stock and forend. Standard three line Spencer markings on top of receiver, top of barrel marked NM forward of receiver, behind rear sight. Six groove bore, correct post-Civil War type magazine follower tube with grooved base. Sling bar and ring, and single sling swivel in the toe. Correct, 1865 pattern long range ladder rear sight. The "New Model" carbine was manufactured by Spencer in small quantities after the Civil War, circa 1868, following the production of the M-1867 carbine. Only about 2,500 of these guns were produced and featured the Spencer patent cartridge cut-off device, allowing the gun to be used as a single shot firearm, preventing cartridges from feeding from the magazine. This system achieved the same results as the US military Stabler cut-off modification. A scarce Indian War carbine.
