McClung, Charles (1761-1835). Partially printed summons, 6 x 7 in. "To the sheriff of _____ county, in the Territory south of ______ Ohio..." to appear in the court of pleas, but no date entered. Form for 1790s (with last digit blank). Signed "Chas. McClung." Docketing on verso indicates $7 paid January 28, 1795. It appears that the order is for Luke Boyer to appear in the case of Jas. Stinson vs William Henry, but some of the abbreviations are unclear.
The Southwest Territory existed from May 1790 until June 1796, when it was admitted as the state of Tennessee.
Charles McClung was a pioneer, surveyor and politician, known for creating the first plat of Knoxville, TN. He was also involved in drafting the state's first constitution, and served as the first court clerk, and certainly signed this form in the latter capacity. His home, which he hired Knoxville architect Thomas Hope to build, still stands and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Very good.
