Southern Sheraton Swell-Front Sideboard
American, 19th century. A Southern Sheraton sideboard in cherry with mahogany veneer and pine and poplar secondary, having a rectangular swell-front top above a conforming central drawer over a bowfront cupboard, the center section flanked by two stacks of one short drawer over one bottle drawer with each end having one short drawer over one lower door, the crotch-grained fronts further embellished with cockbeading and gilt knobs, the case with paneled sides and rising on six turned legs ending in ball feet and castors; ht. 40.75, wd. 81, dp. 24 in.
The sideboard comes with a letter written by Lilian Graham Evans (1875-1947) of Danville, Kentucky in 1941. According to family history, the sideboard belonged to her grandmother Susan Clark who brought it to Mason County, Kentucky from Culpepper County, Virginia following her marriage to Joseph Kincaid Penrall(?). Hester Bryant Glore (1878-1956) received the sideboard as a gift from Lilian Evans.
Provenance: Formerly the property of Helen Glore Bogard (1938-2011) whose grandmother, Hester Bryant Glore (1878-1956), was a descendent of the Bryants who settled and founded Bryantsville, formerly Smith's Station, in Garrard County Kentucky.
Some small veneer losses and glue repairs. Some scratches scattered throughout with a higher concentration along the front edge of the top and on the right side panel. Right and left outermost doors with split and lifting veneer and chips near the escutcheons. Left door interior with a crack near the top hinge. Knobs are later. Possibly had a gallery at one time.
