- Lot Description
South Carolina Model 1840 Artillery Officer's Saber
31.25" curved, single-edged blade with 24.5" stopped median fuller. 5.5" gilt brass hilt with single knuckle bow and forward swept upper quillon with floral motif flat disc final. Blade etched with floral motifs on the reverse, a large US and a fully erect Tecumseh wielding his tomahawk. Obverse blade etched with floral motifs, patriotic panoplies of arms and an American eagle with a ribbon in its beak that reads E Pluribus Unum . Obverse also etched with scroll that contains a three-line Ames mark in script dry-needle etching that reads: N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield . Saber contained in silver-plated brass scabbard with two suspension rings, which is engraved with floral motifs and a large Palmetto Tree in the central panel between the two mounts. The reverse of the scabbard is lightly scratched with the following places and battles: Palo Alto, Birmingham, Tupelo Cty Line, Pontotoc, Cherry Creek, Jonesboro, Powder Springs, Lost Mountain, Dallas, Silver Creek. The name "Macintosh" is also scratched into the reverse of the scabbard as well.
Good. Blade is dark and heavily oxidized with etching somewhat concealed by the patina. Hilt completely refinished, gold gilded, grip re-wrapped and incorrectly restored; originally the hilt was silver plated. Scabbard worn with traces of silver and numerous bumps, dings and mars.Condition
