State Gazette. Austin, TX: William H. Cushney, September 1, 1849. Vol. 1, No. 2. 8pp, 14 x 20 in. Also known as the Texas State Gazette. The weekly State Gazette was first published on August 25, 1849, making this newspaper the second issue ever published. The State Gazette was one of the most highly influential in Texas, and was known for its strong states'-rights positions. It ceased publication by 1879.
Featuring an historic account of "The Storming of San Antonio in 1835."
The Siege of Bexar preceded the Battle of the Alamo, and was the first major campaign in the Texas Revolution. In this article, a former soldier describes his experiences in the Texas army as it laid siege to the Mexican Army near San Antonio. Ultimately, the volunteers of the Texas army attacked and defeated the Mexican army. The account of the event as presented in this paper is actually a "Review of certain articles lately published in the Western Texian, over the signature of 'A late Officer of the Army,' entitled 'Slight Reminiscences of the Texas Revolution. Storming of San Antonio de Bexar,' & c." The newspaper takes issue with the statements made by the anonymous officer, decrying him for making himself the hero in his own tale, and having been "compelled to draw so largely on his imagination to supply what has evidently escaped his recollection."
Overall, an interesting recounting of a major event in the Texas Revolution.
