Printed broadside, approx. 11 x 19.5 in. Who Endorsed the Helper Book! Who Were the Inciters to Bloodshed? 'The Unconditional Abolition of Slavery,' 'Peaceably, if we can; Violently, if we must.'" (Not imprinted, however the Library of Congress cites this broadside as having been published in New York, 1861). The title is arranged in five lines. Beneath, the heading, "Read! Read! Read!" is featured in bold text above four long columns of text decrying Hinton Rowan Helper, the author of The Impending Crisis.
The article says of the book, "It was so extravagant in tone, and so diabolical in its designs, that it was at first generally supposed to be the work of a fool or a madman. No one could believe that any sane or civilized personal really entertained any such devilish purposes as it professed." It goes on to cite the most provocative excerpts from the book, including a call for the "speedy and absolute abolishment" of the system of slavery one page 121, and the assertion that "slaveholders. . . deserve to be at once reduced to a parallel with the bases criminals that lie fettered within the cells of our public prisons," on page 158.
The article goes on to condemn "endorsers, aiders and abettors of this Revolution and Treason," including many members of the Republican Party, a few of them being W. H. Seward, Schuyler Colfax, Francis E. Spinner, and S. E. Sewell. Their endorsements of The Impending Crisis and its premises are printed along with their names, and the subscription amounts given by each man to aid in the circulation of the book. The article concludes by blaming these leaders of the Republican Party for the Civil War, asking, "Can the people be any longer deceived as to who are justly responsible, before God, for our present horrible fratricidal, and devastating negro equality, Civil War?"
Hinton Rowan Helper (1829-1909) was born into a slave-owning family in North Carolina, a fact that gave him considerable credibility on the topic in many readers' opinions. Unlike many famous abolitionists, his argument against slavery was primarily economic. He believed that the system of slavery was hurting non-slave owners in the south, keeping them from experiencing economic prosperity. His controversial work helped to elect Abraham Lincoln in 1860, and Helper was consequently appointed US consul to Buenos Aires by Lincoln in 1861. Many have considered Helper’s The Impending Crisis it to be the most important non-fiction abolitionist book published, due to the reactions, both positive and negative, it elicited.
