Sixth plate ambrotype of four well-dressed gentlemen, each wearing a unique hat, seated together in a small studio or office, accompanied by two contemporary penned labels, which identify the subjects as: "Members of the McAllister Law Firm, Bellefonte, PA. James A. Beaver on left, John White on right, A.A. McDonald and William Waring in the center. James A. Beaver M. Mary McAllister in 1865." Housed in full, pressed paper case.
The subject identified at left, James Addams Beaver (1837-1914) was an attorney, recruiter and field commander, serving with the 2nd, 45th, and 148th Pennsylvania Infantries during the Civil War. He was wounded four times while fighting at Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Reams' Station, where he was wounded in the right thigh, which resulted in the loss of his leg. Following the war, Beaver became a politician, serving as the 20th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891. He also served as acting president of the Pennsylvania State University from 1906 to 1908.
