Field, Fanny A. Wisconsin settler. ALS, 4pp, 8 x 5 in., "Falls of St. Croix, Wis." With original envelope with three cent postage stamp. August 28, 1862. Addressed to Libbie Wickham of Racine, WI.
Fanny A. Field left with her family from the comforts of the city in Racine, WI, to the outer rim of of the state in St. Croix Falls. Loneliness was a constant companion of Fanny's as she wrote a letter to her dear friend who was going to be married soon. Loneliness soon became terror as news from the Sioux Uprising in Minnesota reached her new town. "We are much afraid of the Indians. You no doubt have read in the papers of the horrible things they have been doing not many miles from home," she wrote. "We are much afraid that the Chippewas will join the Sioux and we will then be in danger. We rise every morning very thankful that we have not been scalped or our house burned." Starving from a lack of food and frustrated by unfair dealing with traders, a band of Sioux began a major uprising that resulted in the killing of approximately 500 white settlers in New Ulm, MN. The loss was so great, President Abraham Lincoln mentioned it in his second annual address.
Fear prompted settlers to flee the area. Fanny wrote, "Some of the people of this place are moving from the country into this village and the one opposite (Taylor's Falls) in order for safety. The men have formed a company to drill so as to be prepared for the Indians should they come...I try to be cool and contented but I tremble every time I look at an Indian." St. Croix and the Chippewa remained peaceful. Six weeks after the revolt, troops gathered and imprisoned over 2,000 Sioux men, women, and children. Although Lincoln commuted many of the death sentences, 38 Sioux hanged for the massacre---the largest mass execution in American history.
Typical folds of the letter and some oxidation of the ink. Slight toning of the paper.
