ALS, 2pp, 8 x 10 in., "Elk River, Min." September 2, 1862. Written at the time of the Sioux Uprising, also known as the Dakota War of 1862, which began in August 1862.
Letter discusses business matters, but also provides interesting details about the uprising and its impact on the community. "Our Indian troubles are not quieted yet and I fear we will have more than is pleasant to bear, for the past two weeks we have almost been under Marshall law. Military officers on the move had orders to press into the service all horses and carriages that were wanted...We are already immensely damaged by these Indian troubles..."
At the time the letter was written, bands of Dakota warriors had engaged in a series of assaults on white settlements in Minnesota, Dakota Territory, resulting in large numbers of settler casualties. Ultimately, Minnesota Militia and US Army soldiers were called in to quell the violence, and by late September 1862, the majority of the Sioux fighters had surrendered or been killed. A series of trials then commenced. On December 26, 1862, 38 Sioux warriors were executed in Mankato, MN, in what remains the largest mass execution in American history.
Letter is in overall good condition, except for horizontal tear on top left quadrant and another horizontal tear on bottom right.
