- Lot Description
Silver gelatin copy print, 8 x 10 in., including margins, inscribed in the plate "'Washosa' Hicks. Curly at 86. Only Survivor of Custer's Last Battle." With additional notation in lower right margin, "'Washosa' B. Hicks, Indian Scout, Guide, and Traveler. / Born Fort Sill, April 3, 1841 (Half breed Indian) / Only survivor of Little Big Horn battle June 26, 1876." Although the inscription indicates that this is indeed Custer's scout Curley, both the date and location of his birth are inaccurate, as Curley was born ca 1856 in Montana Territory. A curious photograph worthy of additional research.
